When it comes to beauty services, there is no denying that a hair change strikes a deep emotional cord. Whether you're just trimming off split ends or joining the unicorn, candy-colored movement, you want your locks to be in the hands of the stylists and colorist who have hair-care on lockdown. So in this #AGLseries, I'm highlighting one of those stylists that are making good hair days and selfie perfection possible. Meet Davide Marinelli, founder of Davide Hair Studio in New York City.
The Italian born, New York City-based (since 2002) stylist is making waves with his customized looks that draw inspiration from his extensive travels and exposure to different cultures, history, and fashion. His signature styles range from technically precise bobs to sexy long layers, men’s cuts, sleek and bouncy blowouts, effortless Updo’s and Balayage color technique - all of which are known to complement his client's lifestyle and hair types.
In addition to creating runway ready hair, he also spends his time educating and inspiring other stylists both in his salon and others as part of the Oribe Education team. His passion and dedication to the hair industry drive him to never miss an opportunity to learn new tricks or share his Italian and New York City-rooted skills with his peers.
His work has been featured everywhere from the runways of New York Fashion Week for designers such as Jason Wu, Theory, Monique Lhuillier, Cartier, Jasmine Chong and Robert James, to some of the top modeling agencies, to working backstage with Orive at high profile fashion shows such as Brandon Maxwell, Sally Lapointe, Edun, R13 Denim, A Détacher, and The Blonds and working for NY Men’s Week with the Oribe team on shows such as Cadet, Chapter, David Hart and J Linderberg.
But, his most recent venture was opening up Davide Hair Studio where himself and his team of A-list stylists, colorists and beauty technicians use their artistic expression to create gorgeous looks that complement their customer's unique style. The salon draws inspiration from the raw and natural beauty of traditional Italian culture; so if you want to experience the art of elegance and sophistication while you relax, unwind, and allow them to deliver luxury haircare and customer service at its finest -- this is your place.
And, if you keep reading, you'll get an exclusive look at how Davide got started in the biz, when he knew it was time to open his own salon, how he stays inspired, overcomes self-doubt and what advice he'd share for those looking to follow in his footsteps!
Q&A
Can you tell us a bit about your background? I was born and grew up in the South of Italy, and I moved to New York City in 2002. I started doing hair in 2007.
What was your “gold lining" that lead you down this career path? When I was working on a photo shoot as a Photographer Assistant, I noticed that I was more intrigued with hair and how it told a story. I didn't realize I had a passion for it until I went to cosmetology school and fell in love with everything about it.
You recently opened up a Davide Hair Studio in New York City. Why was now a good time? I set goals for myself and this was my 5-year goal from when I was hired at my last salon. A year and a half ago I started my search for a location and when I found the right space, that when I knew it was time, without forcing it.
What services do you offer? We offer everything hair to beauty services, including customized hair treatment, haircuts, men's grooming, custom color, makeup and bridal packages.
What is your creative process like? What inspires you today? For me, it’s all about the mood, the season, music and how bold myself or the client is feeling - as long as it's organic.
How has the Italian culture influenced your work? The culture has a major role in my work. From the design of the salon, to the style of classic, chic hair, to the way we dress and our customer service.
What’s in your travel grooming kit? Oribe Lip Balm, La Mer Eye and Face Cream, Oribe Star Glow Hair Wax, Kiehls Face Wash and Hand Cream, and Oribe Radiant Face Oil Drops.
What has been the most exciting moment in your career to date? The highlight of my career, but a more personal goal, was to meet Mr. Oribe Canale. When I did that, was the most exciting time so far.
Has the space changed since you first entered? If so, how? The energy of the space was always good, but now with the different personalities, it has become greater and much more colorful. The space has evolved into its own charming self.
In moments of self-doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up? You take a step back, look at what you have accomplished, take a moment to reflect and absorb it, and remind yourself that the best way is to take it one project at a time.
What quotation or saying inspires you and motivates you to be yourself and do what you love? There are enough heads out there that you don’t have to step on other's toes to build yourself and stay true to your individuality because no one else can offer what you can.
What characteristics do you admire most in male and female hairdressers? Strong, confident females that think slightly like a man and a male that can make anyone in their chair feel sexy with a little flirt.
What’s your best advice for all those people who want to follow in your footsteps? Believe in yourself, surround yourself with people that see and believe in your vision, set goals and help others around you.
